Temporal mandibular joint

The temporal mandibular joint, known as the TMJ, is the joint that connects the upper and lower jawbones. The TMJ is moveable and can become misaligned in the same manner as the bones of the spine. The two bones which make up the TMJ are held in their correct position by the surrounding muscles of the jaw. The actions of these muscles are controlled by the nerves protected by the upper bones of the neck.

How does the TMJ become misaligned?

When the bones of the upper neck become misaligned, the nerve flow or control of the muscles of the jaw becomes blocked. The muscles lose their normal rhythm of contraction and relaxation. This causes their connection on to the jaw bones to be flawed. The result is a misaligned TMJ or jaw.

What are some of the symptoms of a misaligned TMJ?

The most common symptom of a TMJ misalignment is temporal or lateral headaches.  Another frequent ailment is for the patient to have an unequal bite or even a recurring popping of the jaw.

How does Chiropractic help TMJ problems?

A Chiropractor can help TMJ disorder through realigning the first two bones of the spine. This allows for an improved control of the muscles of the jaws thereby allowing the jaws to open and close more smoothly. The relief of symptoms is usually quite fast, though maintenance of the upper spine is suggested in order to prevent relapse.

If you know someone with a TMJ problem, send them to your Chiropractor. They will be amazed by the results!
